"A grand adventure is about to begin..." ~ Winnie the Pooh
The beginning of a life. What could be more incredible? The newborn session is an exciting time at the studio of Amy Rich Photography. We go to great lengths to ensure you will have beautiful portraits of this special moment in your life. Your baby will change so fast it will take your breath away. Photography is a great way to stop that moment and allow you time to go back, see those tiny dimpled hands again and remember your child's beginning right before you watch them walk across the stage at their high school graduation.
How to help ensure a successful newborn session
Schedule a consultation. This is a no charge/no obligation time for you to come into the studio where we can meet and go over any questions about pricing, clothing, backgrounds, props, etc. I highly recommend this for all potential clients.
Commonly Asked Questions
When is the best time to schedule the newborn shoot? As soon as possible. While babies are considered newborns until they reach six weeks of age, the optimal time is within the first five days of their life. I recommend that you call me when you first go into the hospital to have the baby and we will schedule the session at that time.
What should my baby wear and can I change their clothes during the session? That is entirely up to you. Normally I photograph the babies naked but you are welcome to bring in some clothing items. Some people bring in the gowns that the baby wore home from the hospital, or family heirlooms such as clothing their parents wore. Just remember that changing often tires the baby so you may want to limit the clothing changes.
Can I or my other children be included in the photos and if so what do we wear? Absolutely! I would love to include you in the photos. If you are going to bring other children it always helps to bring in Grandma or someone else who can help with those children during the times we are focusing on the little one. There is no additional charge per extra person. As for clothing, I love either long sleeve plain black shirts which focuses all the attention on faces and hands or all white for more Madonna style photos. Another option for mom is to be draped in fabric for a very soft, ethereal photograph.
What if my baby is fussy? That can happen. We all have days where we are out of sorts but unlike ourselves, your baby can not fake his way through. If the baby is very unhappy we just call it a day and reschedule. There is no additional charge for this and the second shoot is always a success.
How long does the session last? That is up to your baby! A newborn session generally lasts from 30 minutes to two hours. We are on your baby's schedule so it is up to them. If they are hungry, we stop to feed them. We will also spend some time getting them to sleep.
Why do you want the newborn to sleep? Newborns are beautiful when they sleep. They look so peaceful and sweet. When they are awake they are often moving around, crossing their eyes or sticking out their tongues so we try our best to get those sweet babes to sleep.
Do you have props? Yes, The studio does have some props but you are welcome to bring others. We can discuss types at the consultation.
What is the process? You bring your baby to the studio where we create the photographs. At that time we will schedule a time for you to come back and preview the portraits and place your order. Your order will usually arrive back at the studio within two weeks.
Do you do birth announcements? Absolutely! I offer custom, hand designed announcements for an additional charge.
